Case Study for the Key Concepts exam...

For the second half of your exam, you will need to compile a case study on a case study on a  music production company.  We're going to be looking at Black Butter Records - an independent music company.  Check them out:

Once you have done this, have a look at the blog by BBC Radio 1's Hue Stevens:

Last minute checks!

Dear all,

Having a look through your blogs, I have noticed not all of you have uploaded your magazine deconstructions.  In order to show you understand the conventions of a magazine, you MUST include deconstructions of magazines (I would say at least 3 - make sure you have front cover, contents page and double page spread).

Nearly there!

A little help with your blog...

For a little help with the evaluation, check out April's blog:  http://april-mccullin.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/evaluation.html.

Also, remember to detail your stages of production.

Question 7...

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Compare your final piece to your prelim task.  Consider:

  • How you have improved.
  • What you have learnt.
  • How you got from the original point to where you are now.
  • What you had to learn.
  • What you would do differently now.
  • Are you pleased?
Remember: You have progressed and have developed as designers, be proud of this and talk about your awesomeness!

Question 6...

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

This  is where you detail all the technologies you have used during this process and explain what you have learnt about them.  You might want to:

  • Make a list of all the technologies you have used - could you do a wordle?  Remember, this includes cameras, as well as computer technology.
  • Consider if you have either learnt new skills or improved old ones.
  • What technology have you used in the organisation of this project?  Excel, word, blog etc.
It is really important you consider how you have got to where you are and how this has included the use of technology.

Black Butter Records

It is over to you know. You need to do some research.

  • Using the following sites (and any others you come across), make a detailed study of how Black Butter Records produce, distribute market and exchange their products.
  • Find out how big/small they are.
  • Find out who they produce and how popular these artists are.
  • Think about how we get their music.
  • How do they compare to/compete with the major record labels?
  • What technologies do they use?
  • What new media do they embrace?
  • Who are their audience?

Managing your time...

There are only 7 weeks to go, until your coursework folder MUST be handed in.  Here is what must be achieved in this time:

  • Final production (including uploading on to your blog) of your front cover, contents page and double page spread.
  • Evaluation questions answered and uploaded.
  • Blog complete (see the previous post for guidance on this).
Manage your time well from here on in!

Remember: layer it, screen shot it, BLOG IT!

How to make the most out of my blog...

With only 7 weeks until your coursework folder need to be handed in, it really is time to get thinking about you make the most out your blog.  Remember: these are marks you can gain quite easily and they can make the difference.  From looking at your blogs, here are a few ways to make sure you get a level 3/4:

  • You must include work on shotlists, layouts, drafting and storyboarding.  This means you need to show the stages of production.  Consider how you got from your original idea to the final product.  THINK: you did not just come up with the final picture/s, you took lots and narrowed them down.  How did you come up with the idea of the picture/s you used; did you have a storyboard to help?
  • You must demonstrate how you organised and constructed your pages.
  • You must have a detailed understanding of the music industry, magazines and your chosen genre.
  • You MUST have research into and feedback from your target audience - consider how to deliver this in a whizzy way.
  • You MUST have research into similar products and consider how this informs your product.
  • You need to be able to show why you have made the choices you have.  If you have followed the conventions, you should have detailed analysis of where these conventions can be seen.  If you have subverted the conventions, you need to be able to explain why you did this.
  • You must show your stages of planning.
  • It is good to show you understand the whole process - planning, production, marketing, distribution and consumption.
To make sure you are really doing your best, go back through my blog and check you have done everything I have asked you to do.

Good luck!
